Iran Oil Bombings Raise Major Environmental Fears
The war between Iran and Israel is still continuing on a serious note. But the concern is not longer only political or related to military tensions but is also serious for major environmental disaster that may rise soon. The airstrikes majorly aiming the oil facilities near Tehran. This has led to massive fires and toxic smoke adding to pollution that may soon affect land, air and water very seriously. The environment monitors indicate that this damage is expected to increase even more because the war effects are spreading across many regions. The scientists and health experts are concerned the environmental impacts may affect the life of millions of people.
The hit in major oil storage areas such as Shahran oil, south of Tehran depot etc. This attack broke out major fires resulting in thick black smoke covering large parts of the city. The fire due to the attack has caused a huge smoke over the area triggering the breathing issues for the civilians.
Even the authorities are continuously warning the people to avoid staying outdoors as much as possible. Staying indoors is the safest for now. This situation turned into worse when the soot got mixed with rain due to burning of oils. This reportedly led to black rain or acid rain seen in the many parts of Tehran. The smoke from oil fires contains large amounts of toxins such as sulphur and nitrogen compounds. When these chemicals get mixed with rain it results as acid rain. This rain is not good for human skin, causes plants damage, pollutes the water, and irritates the animal skin too. After when the war will continue to spread then it is concerning that environment may become even worse with time.
The smoke and chemicals from burning of oil is definitely dangerous for the breathing air. According to some sources it is confirmed by the director general of World Health Organization that this damage to petroleum oil will cause contamination in air, water and food supplies too. This is very serious because it is affecting not only adults but little children and people with existing medical conditions too.
Some of the common problems that people are suffering from air contamination are such as difficulty in breathing, irritation in eyes, headaches etc. People who already are diagnosed with asthma or lung issues are at the worst condition right now because they are suffering the most.
One thing is to note these health conditions are very concerning because they may have a long term impact on people and environment. The harmful compounds are very triggering that may even interfere with DNA and cause cancer issues.
If the war situation remains the same then the health effects may lead to chronic health issues for people who are living in nearby areas. The cleaning of the contamination in oil is difficult to do. Some of polluted soil and water remain triggering for some years.
Drinking water and water supplies are one of the major problem. When pollutants reach the underground then they affect the water supply an cleaning them becomes a major challenging task. The environmental damage could spread across multiple countries and affect wildlife, marine life, agriculture and human health. The ecosystems may take upto minimum decades to recover itself. Also it will be costly in billion dollars.
Now the war is not only limited to Iran bit is spreading to Persion Gulf region too. People are witnessing multiple attacks on energy infrastructure. According to recent reports a major strike hit to gas export facility in Qatar. The refinery of Saudi Arabia was attacked too. The fuel storage hubs of Oman were destroyed. The energy facilities of UAE are in bad condition. These places are key locations for storage of fuel and other industry related compounds. Triggering them has caused contamination in environment now. The ecosystems are disturbed.
The tracking of most of the environment challenges is not practically possible even now and then. Due to war the environment is already suffering from the consequences. However, The Persian Gulf is already one of the most important energy hubs in the world. Any environmental disaster there could have global consequences.
The environment problems are now becoming the concern of whole world as it is alarming for international countries too. The pollutant levels in affected areas are causing people to be vulnerable to health risks.
Their effects can spread far beyond the original conflict zones.
The war that broke out in Iran is a part of geopolitics. It gives us a lesson that war is not only about conflict between nations it is also a conflict towards the environment. The smoke toxins of Iran is one such example where it is already affecting millions of people. The conflict is now expanding to Persion Gulf so the impact can become more worse and triggering. For now the scientists and experts are continuously working to monitor and control the environmental situations. People are hoping that the war do not spread more now. Afterall it is not only about people or countries which are getting affected but the environment is suffering too and this may even impact the future generations making them pay a higher price.
